Attention turned to cup action on Tuesday evening as the Saddlers made their way to the Weston Homes Stadium and took on League One Peterborough United in the Vertu Trophy, Round of 16.
The opening goal of the contest went the way of the hosts, as Gustav Lindgren took advantage of some poor Saddlers defending to put his side into an early lead.
Peterborough were handed a golden opportunity to double their lead later in the half after David Okagbue fouled his man inside the area, allowing Malik Mothersille to score from the spot.
Walsall didn't allow their heads to bow and cut the home side's lead in half when Danny Johnson celebrated his 75th club appearance with a goal.
Sadly for the Saddlers, they were soon two goals behind once again, as Lindgren took advantage of yet more dismal defending to grab his second goal of the contest.
Peterborough added their fourth goal in the second half as Mothersille got his second of the night as the Saddlers were punished for not making more of their frequent shots on goal.
Walsall grabbed a late consolation as second-half substitute Josh Gordon marked his return from injury with a late strike.
