PRE-MATCH NEWS & VIEWS

Fresh on the back of their 1-0 win over Fulham Under-21s in the EFL Trophy, the Saddlers return to league action this weekend as they take on Salford City with a view to making it three wins in as many games.

Danny Johnson's second-half strike proved to be enough to take three points against the Cottagers' Under-21s, taking Walsall to five points from a possible six ahead of their final group game against Shrewsbury Town in November.

Adding to last weekend's welcome win over Bradford City — and a match that saw Danny Johnson score the first of his two winning goals of the week — the Saddlers have every right to feel confident ahead of kick-off.

Opponents Salford City sit 13th in the table ahead of kick-off, and reach this weekend's match in the wake of a bounce-back victory over Cheltenham Town as second-half substitute Hakeeb Adelakun grabbed two goals to secure three welcome points for the Ammies.

WALSALL TEAM NEWS

Walsall's injury crisis continues as Priestley Farquharson is out for four months, Donervon Daniels for three months, while Oisin McEntee and Josh Gordon are out for a couple of weeks, though Gordon has suffered a setback with the extent of which is yet to be realised.

On-loan Birmingham City midfielder George Hall is suffering from a bad back and is rated 50/50 ahead of kick-off.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and Salford City have met on just ten previous occasions, and it's Salford that hold an overall head-to-head lead, having won six times compared to Walsall's four.

The first meeting took place at Banks's Stadium on Saturday, 5th October 2019, and saw the visitors ease to victory by three-goal-to-nil as Luke Armstrong, Jake Jervis, and Ibou Touray all hit the back of the net.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting took place on Monday, 1st April 2024 at the Bescot Stadium and saw the Saddlers take all three points.

Walsall were the side to grab the opening goal of the game as Jamille Matt, who recently returned to fitness, headed home from an Isaac Hutchinson cross with just nine minutes on the clock.

Salford's leveller arrived shortly after the match reached the hour mark as Matty Lund headed the ball beyond Jackson Smith and into the back of the net.

The Saddlers re-took the lead in the second minute of second-half stoppage time as substitute Mo Faal twisted and turned before slamming the ball into the back of the net. A huge result for the Boys from the Bescot.

MATCH OFFICIALS

The EFL has confirmed that Declan Bourne who is based in Nottinghamshire will take charge of the match with Ivan Stankovic and Steven Lawson being named as assistant referees, whilst Emmanuel Edet has been selected as Fourth Official.
