We are saddened to learn that former Walsall midfielder Craig Shakespeare has died at the age of 60.
Leaving Walsall in 1989, Craig went on to play for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, West Bromwich Albion, Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United, Telford United, and Hednesford Town, making over 525 league appearances before retiring in 2000.
Born in Birmingham on Saturday, 26th October 1963, Craig Robert Shakespeare began his career in the beautiful game as an apprentice with the Saddlers at Fellows Park, going on to turn professional in 1981.
Making over 350 first-team appearances for the Saddlers, 'Shakey' helped the team win promotion to Division Two via the Play-Offs in 1987/88, an achievement which he described as his greatest in football.
During an interview with West Bromwich Albion's official website, Craig rated his goal in a League Cup draw between the Saddlers and Chelsea in October 1984 as the best of his career.
After hanging up his boots Craig went on to enjoy a prolific coaching career working for the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City, where he teamed up with former Walsall defender and manager Dean Smith, Hull City, Watford, Aston Villa - again alongside Dean Smith - and Norwich City.
A statement, released by the League Manager's Association on behalf of the Shakespeare family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Craig Shakespeare, “SHAKEY”.
Craig passed away peacefully this morning at home surrounded by his family.
Whilst the family are immensely proud of his footballing achievements as both a player and a coach, to us, his family, he will always primarily be a loving and loved husband, father, son, brother and uncle.
The loss is devastating to us all and we would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly difficult time as we try to come to terms with and mourn, the loss of a very special person.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge the many prayers and good wishes sent during the past few difficult months, many of which we were unable to respond to but all meant a lot to Craig and the family."
We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Craig's family and friends during this sad time.
