Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler has spoken to the media and admitted to being a little frustrated as his side opened their 2023/24 campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Morecambe.
Having to bounce back after falling behind to Adam Mayor's well-taken effort after twenty-five minutes, Saddlers striker Danny Johnson netted his third goal in as many competitive games to take the game into the break all-square.
However, despite controlling much of the attacking display, Ferrend Rawson put the Shrimps back into the lead late in the second half to secure three points for Derek Adams' side.
Sadler, who is entering his first full season as Head Coach, welcomed Johnson's opening goal of the season and admitted he thought the former Mansfield man was likely to have an even bigger impact upon the game, but that wasn't meant to be as the home side took the points.
Speaking via the Express & Star, Mat said; "I keep mentioning constantly about what is the next thing that you do.
"We will go behind at times, that's going to happen. It's what you do next, how you learn from it, how you stick together, and I think we did that incredibly well in how we reacted to the goal, and how we imposed ourselves on the game.
"It's just frustrating that we haven't taken at least a point which we deserved. But the signs are positive.
"For me, we just need to make sure that we strip it back again, and do exactly what we do. We need to keep looking forward because that's the most important thing.
"Danny looked threatening throughout the game and you were just waiting for that ball to drop at his feet.
"You just felt like it was ready to happen at any moment in the game, and it felt like a game when he was going to pop up and score the winner.
"But it wasn't to be, unfortunately. We have to learn from it and we have to learn quickly because the Blackburn game comes thick and fast.
"Set pieces play a massive part in any football match at any level and unfortunately we fell the other side of it today."
