A youthful Walsall XI made the short trip to the Scholars Ground on Tuesday evening as they took on Chasetown in the Semi-Final of the Walsall Senior Cup.
After having their place in the competition restored after Tividale were adjudged to have fielded an ineligible player during their Quarter Final win, the Saddlers were handed a welcome opportunity to reach the final.
Chasetown were by far the better side during the opening stages of the contest with Walsall stopper George Barrett and his backline having plenty to do in order to thwart their hosts' advances, including a succession of early corners and a defensive close-call which almost led to an own goal
Aside from the odd counter-attack, including one which saw Jack Shaw send an effort off target from distance, that was the pattern for much of the game with Chasetown somewhat unlucky not to have opened the scoring during the opening forty-five minutes.
In fact, we had to wait until the game had reached the seventy-fifth minute before the deadlock was broken as Chasetown's Kieron Berry sent an effort in off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
There were no further goals as the home side went on to secure their place in the final of the competition. Back to the drawing board for the young Saddlers as their season of struggle shows no sign of coming to an end.
