Walsall went into Tuesday evening's meeting with the Cobblers on the back of a one-all draw with Stockport County and in search of what would be a first win in nine league games.
The Saddlers started the game well and, despite the visitors having the odd goal-scoring opportunity, were able to take the lead some eight minutes from half-time as Danny Johnson grabbed his ninth goal of the season.
