PRE-MATCH VIEWS

Walsall's winless run extended to twelve all-competition games at the weekend as they held Stockport County to a one-all draw at a well-attended Edgeley Park.

Backed by over 1,200 of the faithful, the team were at least able to end their latest string of defeats at three games, with the point probably being more than they could ask for on the back of such a poor run of form.

Despite the draw with County seeing Andy Williams grab his first goal since he made the move to WS1 in the summer, the team continued to look all at sea for much of the contest as their disappointing form continues.

Tuesday's meeting with Northampton will see Michael Flynn's side come up against one of the firm sides, with the Cobblers losing just one league game so far this season - their latest run seeing them win five on the bounce.

Northampton arrive at the match on the back of a 2-1 triumph over Swindon Town, with goals from Ben Fox and Mitch Pinnock securing three more points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and Northampton Town have met on eighty-seven previous occasions, and it's the Saddlers who hold a narrow overall win/ loss advantage having secured victory on thirty-six occasions compared to the Cobblers' thirty-three.

There have also been eighteen draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at the County Ground on Saturday, 5th November 1927 as the two sides met in a Division Three (South) clash which Northampton would win by ten-goals-to-nil.

The Saddlers secured their first-ever win over the Cobblers just over a year after their first meeting as the two sides clashed on Christmas Day, Tuesday, 25th December 1928, with Walsall winning by four-goals-to-three.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The two sides last met at Sixfields Stadium on Tuesday, 1st March 2022 in a League Two match which ended all-square as Conor Wilkinson's second-half strike cancelled our Mitchell Pinnock's fourth-minute opener.
