Walsall have been named among a host of League Two clubs chasing the signature of FC Halifax Town defender and club captain Niall Maher, who is due to be out of contract in the summer of 2022.
As reported by both The 72 and Football League World, Niall, who has made twenty-one first-team appearances so far this season, is also being tracked by the likes of Carlisle United, Scunthorpe United and Rochdale.
Manchester-born Niall has formed part of a Halifax backline which has risen to second in the Vanarama National League, conceding just sixteen goals, and ranking among one of the best defences in the league.
The 26-year-old began his career with Bolton Wanderers, where he progressed through the ranks, making his first-team debut on Saturday, 2nd April 2016 as the Trotters took on Reading.
After leaving Bolton following the expiry of his deal in July 2016, Maher went on to play for the likes of Bury, Galway United, and AFC Telford United before joining Halifax Town in the summer of 2018.
Niall has made 135 appearances for the Shaymen and is seen as a crucial part of their backline as they look to make it out of the National League and into the EFL for the first time in their thirteen-year history.
Walsall have already secured one of Halifax's gems as they landed Jack Earing in the summer, a deal which may see the Saddlers take pole position in the race for Maher as Jack may be able to pursuade his former colleague to switch to WS1.
