The basement-dwelling Saddlers arrived at the match on the back of two defeats in as many games and in search of a return to winning ways.
With their injury list increasing on a weekly basis, the team needed to pull together and work to avoid a repeat of last season's dismal campaign.
Sadly for the Saddlers, their woes looked like continuing as, with just five minutes on the clock, Timothée Dieng got on the end of a well-placed cross to head the ball home and put the Grecians into the lead.
Walsall then went on to spurn several golden opportunities to not only level the scored but go into the lead, as George Miller and Manny Monthé were both guilty of missing chances that were easier to convert.
Thankfully, the Saddlers were ultimately able to get back on level terms as, just moments after claims for a penalty were turned down, the referee went on to award one for a much softer incident.
Walsall weren't one to look a gift horse in the mouth, however, as on-loan Barnsley man George Miller levelled the scores with the resulting spot kick.
The drama didn't end there, as, just a couple of minutes into the second forty-five, the home side were awarded a spot-kick of their own as goalscorer Dieng was felled inside the area.
Thankfully for the Saddlers, Matt Jay was unable to convert the chance as his effort cannoned off the bar and the scores remained tied.
Unfortunately the Reds their sloppy defending came back to bite them as Sam Nombe was ultimately able to put his team into the lead shortly after the hour mark.
Unperturbed by conceding their second, the Saddlers went on to level the scores for a second time as Miller rose highest to head the ball home.
