Arriving at the match following the shock departure of manager Darrell Clarke, the former gaffer joining Port Vale on Monday afternoon, caretaker Brian Dutton looked to settle his side and secure more much-needed points.
The Saddlers started the game off in style as Coalan Lavery put his side ahead with just three minutes on the clock, as he netted his fifth goal of the campaign.
Sadly for the Saddlers they were unable to retain their lead as Sam Smith levelled the scores following a defensive error, the on-loan Reading prospect slotting home from Alfie May's pass.
Walsall were unable to keep the scores level ahead of half-time as Callum Wright slammed home from distance to put the visitors into the lead just a couple of minutes before the break.
