Walsall Football Club have announced that the club will be making a number of donations of food to support foodbanks in the local area on Friday, 18th December.
Supporters are encouraged to also get involved and will be able to donate any dry goods or toiletries (including children’s toothbrushes) they may have spare such as tinned food, pasta, rice, tinned desserts and long life milk etc.
As well as the club’s contribution, club partners Pom's Kitchen and Deli have also pledged to make a donation.
Supporters can drop food off at the stadium on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays up until Thursday, 17th December by heading to main reception at Banks's Stadium.
The club will then distribute the food across foodbanks in the borough on Friday, 18th December as they aim to support as many people as they can.
Saddlers Chairman Leigh Pomlett is keen to give something back to the community of Walsall having seen fantastic support from the Saddlers’ family throughout the pandemic and he hopes this initiative will help as many people as possible have access to hot meals this winter.
Speaking via the club's official website, Leigh said; "We hope that we can donate as much food as possible. It’s been a very challenging year and we all know how tough the winter months can be for so many families.
"As well as our own contribution, I encourage as many of our wonderful supporters to help out in any way that they can.
"Your support for our club has been phenomenal over the course of the pandemic and this is our way of giving something back to those in a less fortunate position."
Walsall North Foodbank will be one of the beneficiaries of the initiative and Project Manager Steve Grimsley is grateful for the support from the club and its fans.
He said; "I’d like to say a big thank you to Walsall Football Club for considering us.
"Particularly during these difficult times because we have seen a 40 per cent increase in numbers coming to foodbanks so the pressure has been greater than it ever has been in the history of our foodbank so Walsall Football Club can be proud that they are supporting people in real need at a time that is really difficult for many families.
"Any donation we receive, we are very grateful for. It’s always wonderful to see and they do make a real difference to people in poverty.
"We are one of the few foodbanks that offer not just food but we offer sanitary and hygiene products as well."
