The Rumour Mill: Club Legend Linked, Walsall 'Leading the Race' to Land Former Loanee

As we edge ever-closer to the as-yet-unconfirmed start of the 2020/21 campaign, the Saddlers continue to be linked with a variety of players.
Today's potential 'signings' are a duo who are very familiar with life in WS1, one being a long-serving veteran and the other a three-time Saddlers loanee who has just become a free agent.

The first player to be linked with a return the Saddlers is former club captain Andy Butler. Although previously linked with a return, the latest 'news' indicates that club and player are now in discussions with a move apparently on the cards.

36-year-old Butler, who was recently named among the players to be released by League Two side Scunthorpe United, believes he still has plenty to offer and, despite recently being named manager of Doncaster Rovers Belles, is not planning on retirement.

Doncaster-born Butler has amassed well over six-hundred appearances during a career spanning seventeen years and insisted he feels as fit as ever before admitting last season, which saw him make twenty-one first-team appearances, was not one of his best.

Andy, who has already denied that he and the club are in advanced talks, recently took part in an interview with the Express & Star and confirmed his desire to find a club - the club legend admitting Walsall would be tough to turn down - with the centre-back sharing his determination to remain in the game for the foreseeable future.

The second of today's potential new arrivals is soon-to-be-former West Bromwich Albion defender Jack Fitzwater. With the Saddlers said to be 'leading the race' for his signature.

Jack, a product of West Brom's youth system, enjoyed three separate loan spells at the Banks's, making over forty first-team appearances before ultimately returning to the Baggies and their development team.

Fitzwater was recently named among the Baggies' list of released players - fellow former Saddlers loanee Kane Wilson was also on the list - and is said to be looking forward to beginning a new chapter in his career later this summer.

Remember, the above are just rumours and should always be taken with a pinch of salt as Saddlers manager Darrell Clarke is very accomplished at keeping his targets under wraps with a social media 'in the know' unlikely to be the gaffer's first port of call when it comes to revealing his latest acquisition.
