Wes, who joined the club on a short-term deal over the summer, has made seventeen first-team appearances and scored three goals so far this season and is considered to be one of the team's stand out players.
The club are said to have been in discussion with Wes and his representatives over the prospect of a new contract over recent weeks, but development coach Dutton admits there have been no ‘substantial’ developments.
The 22-year-old, who has been linked with Kilmarnock and Southend United, will become a free agent on early January if the Saddlers are unable to tie him down to a deal in the very near future. but Dutton insists the club would ‘love’ to keep him.
Speaking via the Express & Star, Brian said; "We’re in dialogue with Wes at the moment. Obviously he loves playing here, he loves playing for the club and we’d love to keep him. It’s positive dialogue at the moment but without anything substantial there."
McDonald, a product of Birmingham City's youth system, has struggled to secure a permanent place in Darrell Clarke's starting XI despite becoming something of a fans' favourite for his energetic displays.
And Dutton, who also takes charge of Walsall's development team, has challenged the winger to keep his performances consistent as he looks to fire Walsall away from he bottom of League Two.
Brian continued; "That’s Wes McDonald in a nutshell, he’ll frustrate the manager in the first half performance when he’s not keeping possession and he’s giving it away cheaply.
"But the flip side of it is, the one time that he brings the quality to the table, he’ll kill teams. He’s showed how good he can be and the potential there. He’s obviously a great player and he’s brimming with confidence. The fans love him, we love him, and hopefully he can kick on."
