Dean Keates: 'Recent Results Are a Platform to Build Upon'

Walsall manager Dean Keates has spoken ahead of this weekend's League One clash with Fleetwood Town and insisted that his side are still building momentum off the back of the resilient performance against Bradford City, which saw the Saddlers secure the win despite going down to ten men early in the first half.
The win against the Bantams was accompanied by a draw and a welcome clean sheet against Burton Albion and the gaffer wants his side to use those results as a platform heading into tomorrow's match against Joey Barton's Fleetwood as we enter the business end of the season.

Speaking via the club's official website, Dean said; "We used the word galvanise against Bradford. We had to be as positive as we could at half-time. We flipped it around, it was about defying the odds. We had to try and win a football match with 10 men by whatever means necessary.

"The players left everything out there on the pitch, they gave everything. It showed the players care about the football club. It gave them that lift. We know that some performances haven’t been good enough and results hadn’t been good enough. But confidence is massive football.

"So is momentum. If you are in a good place and you are winning games, it becomes easy to win games. When confidence is low, that losing habit becomes the same – it snowballs.

"We needed that Bradford game to stop that bad run and it gave us a platform to build on. It had to be a siege mentality. We spoke to the lads about it and told them they have to take the rough with the smooth. It was also something we spoke about at the start of the season when they were getting pats on the back and everything was going well.

"You have to take the rough side of football because when it’s not going well people will let you know about it. The lads took that on board. They have closed ranks and made sure they stuck together."
