Jon Guthrie: "We’ve Shown on Our Day We Can Compete With Anyone"

Walsall defender Jon Guthrie has spoken ahead of this weekend's League One clash with Play-Off chasing Scunthorpe United and discussed his belief that the Saddlers can take confidence from their victory over The Iron earlier in the season as Kieron Morris' first-half strike secured three much-needed points.
25-year-old Guthrie, who joined the Saddlers last summer after five seasons with Crewe Alexandra, insisted that the team must take confidence from that result as they restricted their opponents to just one shot on target and could've won by a larger margin were it not for Erhun Oztumer's saved penalty.

Jon, who was speaking via the club's official website - Saddlers.co.uk, said; "It can give us confidence. We showed that we can beat them and we produced a good performance on the day. We kept a clean sheet, which would be a good start, and we’ll be looking to do the exact same on Saturday.

"We’ve shown on our day we can compete with anyone. We just haven’t had the consistency to do it throughout the season, which is maybe where we’ve gone wrong. But any game in this league is winnable. We’ll go into any game positive, looking to get points."

The Saddlers head into this match just two points above the relegation zone and although he and his teammates are aware of their plight they continue to believe that it's still within their own hands, he continued; "Anyone would be lying if they say they don’t check the table. The fans probably do it more than us, but, as players, we check the other fixtures and the league table. At the moment, it’s in our hands, which is a big positive.

"We’re not in the relegation zone so it’s down to us stay out of there. We can only do that by performing well and picking up those points. I’d rather be in our position than where some teams are. It’s down to us as players and staff to make sure we stay above the bottom four."
