The young Saddlers haven't been in the best form so far this season and sat at the foot of their group heading into this morning's match, after securing just one victory from their three group games.
Visitors Burton Albion had also won just one of their three group games and, along with the Saddlers, had nothing but pride to play for.
The Saddlers created some good openings during the first forty-five minutes and could've taken the lead earlier in the half as Dylan Parker and Joe Cairns were both denied by Jack Livesey in the Brewers goal.
Walsall secured the game's opening goal with just a few minutes of the first-half remaining as Mitchel Candlin worked the ball across the box before cutting a shot past the goalkeeper to give his side a deserved advantage heading into the break.
The Saddlers doubled their lead just over ten minutes into the second-half as Kian Flanagan, younger brother of first-teamer Reece, received the ball from Dan O'Sullivan and went on to curl a sweet effort into the top corner leaving the 'keeper with no chance.
Burton's best chance of the game didn't arrive until midway through the second-half as Daniel Cook saw a downward header easily gathered by Saddlers stopper Brandon Ganley.
