Walsall goalkeeper Liam Roberts and central defender Theo Vassell are currently on-loan with Vanarama National League side Chester, and were both named in the starting XI as the Blues took on Barrow AFC at the Furness Building Society Stadium.
It was an entertaining game at Holker Street, which saw the sides score five goals between them. The Blues fell behind as the first half was drawing to a close; Elliott Durrell’s poor back pass was seized upon by Ross Hannah and he rounded Liam Roberts to score.
Barrow’s lead was doubled just two minutes later; Jordan Williams heading home the rebound after Roberts had parried Hannah’s initial shot.
The home side extended the advantage on 57 minutes as Williams added his second; cutting inside and rifling home from outside the area.
Jon McCarthy’s men pulled a goal back twenty minutes into the second half as substitute James Akintunde stabbed home from Ryan Astles’ ball in.
The final goal of the match came four minutes later as Theo Vassell tapped home from close range, the centre-back doing well under plenty of defensive pressure. Sadly another defeat for Chester who face Boreham Wood at the weekend.
