Walsall's Interim Head Coach Jon Whitney has spoken to club journalists and discussed midfielder Reece Flanagan's ACL injury, which we reported about on Monday afternoon, and has backed the flame-haired prospect to come back stronger, both mentally and physically.

Speaking via Saddlers.co.uk, Jon said; “I can relate to Reece as I had three ACL ruptures in my career so I understand what it takes to get back from this. It was really unfortunate, as it was just something innocuous in training. He landed awkwardly – it couldn’t have been prevented. Unfortunately, injuries are part and parcel of football.

“But thankfully he’s done it now as some of the months he’ll be doing his rehabilitation - part of May and all of June and July – will be the close season and he won’t miss as much football. He’ll get the best care and treatment possible with physio Marc Czuczman, who has plenty of experience of dealing with this injury, and assistant physio Hannah Price.

“I know Reece will come back a much stronger athlete both mentally and physically. He’s a strong, positive person and we’re hopeful that he’ll be back to full fitness and playing again around Christmas time, meaning he can stay play a big role for us next season.”
