Walsall's hopes of securing automatic promotion to the Sky Bet Championship were dealt a blow on Saturday afternoon as second-placed Burton Albion defeated Play-Off chasing Gillingham by two-goals-to-one at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Brewers opened the scoring late in the first half as Lucas Akins bagged his twelfth goal of the season. Gillingham went on to equalise four minutes into the second half as Cody McDonald headed home from a pinpoint Bradley Dack corner.
There were plenty of chances for both sides during the second half but neither 'keeper was beaten until stoppage time as Burton's Tom Naylor slotted home from a corner, anguish for the Gills as they remain two points behind Barnsley who occupy sixth position in the table.
The result sees the Brewers move six points clear of third-placed Millwall, who defeated Oldham Athletic by three-goals-to-nil, and the fourth-placed Saddlers, who dropped one place on goal difference.
Walsall, who play host to Fleetwood Town in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Monday afternoon, will need to secure all-three points if they are to keep up their slim hopes of securing automatic promotion alive heading into the final week of the 2015/16 campaign.
