Walsall's Interim Head Coach Jon Whitney has spoken to the local press ahead of this weekend's Sky Bet League 1 meeting with Sheffield United, and has discussed on-loan Everton youngster Matthew Pennington, revealing that one text message told him all he needed to know about the central defender.
Speaking via the Walsall Advertiser, Jon said; "He is a technical player as well – if he wasn't, Everton wouldn't have given him a three-year deal last summer. He is a leader, he is a talker and he is somebody who, if needed, can step straight into the team – and the biggest thing is that his character and personality will fit this group.
"There is no ego about him. One text he sent me was 'Up the Saddlers!' which I thought was fantastic. He knew about the club and the way we play. He wanted to come, play games and have an impact. But first and foremost he wants to help us get promotion."
