Ahead of next month's Emirates FA Cup Third Round clash between Walsall and Brentford, former Saddlers manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press and discussed his belief that the Saddlers will never be in a position to make the leap from the Football League to the Premier Division.
Speaking via BBC WM Smith said; "It’s the ambition of the club. They are pushing to try and get into the Premier League. I think that is going to be an impossible thing to do at Walsall.
“Brentford have got ambitions to do that. They match my ambition. You have to move on to new things. I don’t think there any of the staff or any of the players begrudge me the opportunity to go and coach in the Championship.”
He continued; “I would have loved to have done it but, in the past, I have described getting Walsall there as the improbable dream.
“Only three managers have got them to Championship level in 127 years. It just how tough it is to get Walsall in to the Championship and there are no guarantees it’s going to happen.
“What Brentford guaranteed me was a shot at coaching in Championship to pit my wits against really good coaches and players. It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”
