Shrewsbury Town Chief Executive Matt Williams has spoken to the local media and sought to distance Shrews manager Micky Mellon with the vacant manager's job at the Banks's Stadium, as the former Blackpool, Burnley and Tranmere Rovers midfielder was rumoured to be one of a list of candidates for the position.

Speaking via the Shropshire Star, Williams said; “If you’re the chairman of a club in the lower levels of the pyramid, Micky stands out with his win ratio. But from our discussions in the early hours after Tuesday night’s game, he’s desperate to make Shrewsbury better.

“We spoke about the sending off and how Walsall have grown and evolved as a club in League One and his focus is on doing the same at Shrewsbury. He will manage at a higher level at some stage of his career because he’s a fantastic manager.

“Whether there’s any truth in the rumour we don’t know, and we don’t pay much attention to rumours and speculation. But he has the full support of the chairman here. Micky works for an exceptional chairman who not only gives him his full support regarding making as much money available for player recruitment but is not trigger-happy.

"It’s always amazing after there’s a story, the subsequent number of calls from people making their interest known. But it reaffirmed to us that Shrewsbury Town is an attractive proposition to a lot of people.

“Micky will inevitably get linked with other jobs because that’s the nature of the industry. He has done a great job here, not only rebuilding a team to get promoted but rebuilding a side to compete in League One after the sales of key players.”
