Neil Woods' side, went into the match in third position, while opponents Tranmere were the league leaders.
Walsall, who would go on to dominate large swathes of the game, took the lead within the opening minute of the match, as Kyle King, who recently returned from a lengthy injury lay-off, slotted home following a great tackle-busting run, which saw his opponents unable to get the ball away as he showed his fierce pace.
Following a saved Rory Oliver effort, the hosts doubled their lead as the game reached the ten minute mark, Maz Kouhyar slamming home following an initially blocked effort.
Walsall would go on to have several more opportunities ahead of the break as Maz Kouhyar struck the bar, while Kory Roberts forced the 'keeper into a save and Rory Oliver sent an effort narrowly wide of goal.
The second half didn't start quite as swiftly as the first, but the Saddlers did enjoy good spells of possession, and saw a Lezion Cela effort blocked as Rovers sought to settle down and get the ball forward.
