Sky Bet Championship side Brentford have today confirmed the appointment of Walsall manager Dean Smith, following a day of discussions with the West Bromwich born former central defender.

Smith, who began his footballing career as an apprentice with the Saddlers, was appointed as Walsall manager in 2011 following the departure of Chris Hutchings and assistant Martin O'Connor and has guided the club to various positions of safety in Sky Bet League 1 and also helped them reach Wembley Stadium for the first time in their history as they faced Bristol City in last season's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final.

Brentford sacked manager Marinus Dijkhuizen in September and appointed former Coventry City, Everton and Birmingham City midfielder Lee Carsley to the Caretaker role.

The Bees were understood to be closing in on Swansea City Assistant Manager Pep Clotet but discussions collapsed late last week, leading to the Griffin Park outfit turning their attention to Smith, and, following a day-or-so of discussion, they have their man.

Walsall first-team coach Richard O'Kelly will also depart the Banks's Stadium as he joins Smith at Griffin Park.
