The two sides have met on just eleven previous occasions, with the Blues holding a commanding overall lead of nine wins to the Saddlers' one. There has also been one draw during the fixtures' history.

They first met on Saturday, 8th January 1955, in an FA Cup Third Round tie that ended 2-0 to Chelsea, with goals from Seamus O'Connell and Les Stubbs enough to see the side through to the next round.

Walsall's one victory came at Stamford Bridge, on Saturday, 30th March 1963. The match, which was in League Division Two, ended one-nil to the Saddlers.

The last time the two sides met was on 7th October, 1992, where Kenny Hibbitt's Walsall lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Second Round of the 1992/93 Coca Cola League Cup, with Robert Fleck scoring the winner for the Blues.

The Saddlers lost the match 4-0 aggregate as Chelsea had won the First Leg by three-goals-to-nil with goals from Dennis Wise, Eddie Newton and Andy Townsend securing the win.
