Following yesterday's news that veteran defender James Chambers had decided to hang up his boots, Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the local press and insisted that he has been on the look out for new defensive options for some time.
Speaking to Joseph Masi of the Express & Star, Smith said; “I’ve been looking for a new centre-back for a while. I’m very close with James and his family and he we have spoken about his future constantly since the end of the season.
“I had been expecting him not to sign so there have been four or five centre-backs I’ve been looking at. I need a centre-half and we may take another central midfielder, a midfielder we can progress and who will provide added competition.”
