Walsall manager Dean Smith has briefly spoken to members of the local media, and clarified the level of compensation the club will receive from yesterday's transfer of Will Grigg from Brentford to Wigan Athletic.
Grigg's 2013 transfer to the Bees saw a tribunal award Walsall £325,000 plus several add-ons, including £30,000 per appearance (for a selected number of games), and 20% of any future sale, and it's the 'sell-on' that has been clarified.
Early reports suggested that the club will receive 20% of the full fee, which is understood to be in the region of £1,000,000, however Smith has revealed that the club will get 20% of the difference, so all money above the initial £325,000 fee will be split 80/20 with the Saddlers expecting to get around £130,000, not the £200,000 which was previously believed.
The club's current policy is to split all fees received in half, with 50% going to youth development, and the other being added to the 'footballing budget'.
