Walsall manager Dean Smith has once again spoken to the local press as he and his team continue to prepare for the start of the Sky Bet League 1 campaign, and has discussed his desire to hit the ground running as his side take on Oldham Athletic on the opening day of the season.

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Smith said: "We did well at home in the last few games of last season and we want to continue that into this season.

"Getting a home game first gives us that chance. It's always nice to be at home first game and get the fans behind you right from the start.

"We want it to be a successful campaign this year so we want to hit the ground running. We want to turn the Banks's into a bit of a fortress.

"Last season, we didn't start as well at home as we would have liked and that is something we need to put right. If you want to have a successful campaign, you need to be doing it at home.

"We were more entertaining towards the end of the season and that is something we will be stressing to the players. We've got to be more aggressive and on the front foot to go and win football games."
