Sir Elton John’s visit to Walsall's Banks's Stadium on Saturday evening will boost the town’s economy to the tune of up to £1 million - as work on the stadium is well under way.

The club estimate that around 14,000 people will descend on Bescot Crescent and business leaders have welcomed the Rocket Man singer’s decision to play in the borough after his management team revealed he personally picked the venue as part of his European tour.

Walsall Council leader Mike Bird spoke to the Express & Star, and said: “More people coming into town and spending is going to boost trade, the market and the shops that are already here. The event will definitely put Walsall on the map.

“These things are difficult to estimate, but I would say based on the numbers that we think may be coming in and the knock on effect on food, hotel and retail businesses it could mean anything from £500,000 to £1m for the local economy.”
