Earlier today Walsall Football Club's Under 18s side made the short trip to the Shrewsbury Sports Village to take on Shrewsbury Town Under 18s, which was their final Football League Youth Alliance (North West) fixture of the season.
The young Saddlers arrived at the game, which kicks off at 2:00pm, on the back of a competitive 0-0 draw with Wrexham, whilst the Shrews defeated Carlisle United by three-goals-to-one last time out.
The hosts got the game underway, but it was the Saddlers who had the opening efforts of the game, Rory Oliver and Romario Reid testing Salop 'keeper Harry Lewis, who was alert to the danger.
The hosts' opening chance of the game came though Joe Kenton, who is fed down the left wing but is unable to get a shot away as Dan Jezeph rushes out to end the attack.
As the game reached the twenty-five minute point it remained fairly even, with both sides having good spells on the ball.
With thirty-nine minutes on the clock Shrewsbury opened the scoring, John McAtee broke into the box, deceived his marker and sent a shot past Jezeph, good play from the hosts.
Walsall came close to equalising as the game neared the break, Kory Roberts, a former member of the Birmingham City youth set-up, rose well to head a Saddlers free kick just over the bar.
HALF TIME SCORE: SHREWSBURY TOWN 1 WALSALL 0
The Saddlers got the second-half underway, and had the first chance of the game, Brendan Pooni cut inside from the right and got his shot away, but 'keeper Lewis easily saved.
A few minutes later, Walsall's Jordon Sangha broke down the wing, and sent a shot in on goal, sadly the post prevented the travelling side from getting back into the game, as Salop cleared the ball.
Just before the hour mark Walsall levelled the scores, Romario Reid broke free of the defence and slots home.
Later in the half Reid had a chance to double his tally but he could only send his shot wide as the 'keeper scrambled across goal.
With less than fifteen minutes of the game remaining Walsall went into the lead, a neat passing move ended with Jordon Sangha slotting home from close range.
Romario Reid was again alert to test the 'keeper as he latched onto a long-ball and sent in a low drive, which was gathered well.
The home side were unable to get back into the game as the Saddlers ended the league campaign with a win.
FULL TIME SCORE: SHREWSBURY TOWN 1 WALSALL 2
GOALS: McAtee 39' -- Reid 59', Sangha 77'
Next week the two sides meet once again, but this time it's the Midland Youth Cup Final, which is to be played at Banks's Stadium, on Monday, 20th April.
