Walsall Football Club first-team manager Dean Smith has spoken to the club's official website following Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 defeat to Port Vale, and has shared his views on some of the refereeing decisions that he thinks decided the game.
Speaking to Saddlers.co.uk, Smith said; "The whole game hinged on the penalty incident in the 23rd minute. It was a clear penalty and a sending off - why else would our player go down in that situation?
"I thought that their goal was a foul, although we switched off as the cross came in, which was disappointing.
"We were good in the first half and our visitors were hanging on going into the break. We knew it was going to be competitive, but we tried to play our way and created some decent opportunities during that opening period.
"It took us too long to get going at the start of the second half. We were too slow on the ball and the quality just wasn't there for us."
