Former Walsall Football Club player-coach Dean Holden has been put in temporary charge of fellow Sky Bet League 1 outfit Oldham Athletic following the departure of Latics' boss Lee Johnson to Barnsley on Wednesday afternoon.

Dean left the Banks's Stadium in November 2014 after being offered a coaching role with Oldham, a move that would allow him a bigger backroom role and the opportunity to live closer to his family in the Manchester area.

Speaking to OldhamAthletic.co.uk about his appointment, Holden said: "I'm delighted to accept the board's invitation to take charge of first team affairs for the foreseeable future.

"I'm also pleased to have Adam Lockwood assist me in my role as he is a well respected professional and can offer a good knowledge of the game.

"I am fully focused on getting a positive result from Saturday's game with Preston North End and will continue to prepare the squad for that game."
