Earlier this evening Walsall travelled North to Deepdale to take on Preston North End in the 1st leg of the Northern Area Final of this season's Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The match, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports 1, ended 2-0 to the Saddlers, after soaking up pressure from North End, including two point-blank saves from Richard O'Donnell, the Saddlers struck twice with former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Anthony Forde, and ex-Shrewsbury Town striker Tom Bradshaw finding the back of the net as the clock ticked down.

Walsall are now just 90 minutes from making their first ever visit to Wembley Stadium, their 2000/01 Division Two play off victory over Reading taking place at the Millennium Stadium during the famous stadiums rebuild.

The 2nd leg of the Northern Final, which takes place at Banks's Stadium during the week commencing 2nd February, could again be televised as host broadcaster Sky have yet to decide between this match and the Southern Area Final, which is between big-spending Bristol City and Gillingham.
