Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press following Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe United, and has insisted that the Saddlers were the better of the two sides.
Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Dean said; "You don’t want to come to the press and say you were the better team when you’ve just got beaten 4-1 but at times I thought we were.
"We’ve dominated the game for the first 25 minutes and then from our first little bit of loose play we’ve ended up scoring an own goal.
"We didn’t take our chances that came around and then a defensive lapse of concentration has led to us conceding a second goal.
"At half-time, it was a little bit like away at Tranmere in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy – you’re in there and you’re thinking how the hell are we 2-0 down? Because we had dominated the game.
"We asked the question of the lads at the start of the second half because there were two ways the game could go.
"And our response was excellent – we scored a goal and were in the ascendancy and then they were given the opportunity to score their third and that was the turning point of the game."
