Walsall Football Club first-team manager Dean Smith has today confirmed that former Chelsea midfielder Billy Clifford has left the club following the expiration of his short-term contract.
22-year-old, Slough-born Clifford is a product of the Chelsea Football Club Academy, and arrived at Banks's Stadium in the summer, after negotiating his early release, with two years remaining on the deal.
Since joining the Saddlers he has made just a handful of appearances for the club, and found himself further down the pecking order following the arrival of Leicester City midfielder Michael Cain.
Several hours after Clifford's release Walsall manager spoke to the Express & Star about Billy's departure, he said; "He came in on a short-term contract to January and has not featured in the last month or so. He's probably not developed and progressed as much as we both would have liked."
