Bescot Banter is sad to report that former Walsall Football Club captain Albert McPherson has passed away at the age of 87.
Born in Salford, Albert, who played as a centre half, began his career as an apprentice with Salford Lads Club, and went on to enjoy spells with the Royal Engineers, Bury and Stalybridge Celtic, before joining Walsall in 1954.
He remained at Fellows Park for a decade, during which time he amassed a grand total of 367 senior appearances, helping The Saddlers win promotion in 1960 and 1961.
After leaving Walsall in 1964, he became a coach at West Bromwich Albion, a position he held with the first-team, the reserves and also the youth team right up until the mid-1980s.
Albert was named the Saddlers' greatest ever captain during the 125th Anniversary End of Season Awards.
We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Alberts family and friends during this sad time.
