WALSALL HOPE TO END MANTOM INJURY NIGHTMARE

Walsall manager Dean Smith has today revealed that the club may be a step closer to ending midfielder Sam Mantom's injury nightmare.
Walsall manager Dean Smith has today revealed that the club may be a step closer to ending midfielder Sam Mantom's injury nightmare.

22-year-old Mantom has been restricted to just a handful of substitute appearances so far this campaign, after picking up a knee ligament issue ahead of pre-season, and has undergone a series of tests - including several X-Rays and scans, however the club now believe that, following a further examination, they may be close to finally solving the issue.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; “What was a candle of light became a torch which has now become a light bulb. Sam had dye injected into the area and then underwent the scan which has shown up what might be a small tear.

“The doctors believe that might be the root cause of the problems he’s been having and we are hopeful that after the recommended rest he will be ready to go. It will come as a huge relief to Sam and a huge relief to us too.

“The good thing with Sam is it does not take him long to get back to match fitness, he is an incredibly fit lad.

“This is the first injury he’s had since coming to the club and it has been a frustrating time for him. Hopefully, this will be the end of it.”
