
Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Dean Smith said; "He's still working hard on his fitness and it's always tough when you have missed pre-season.
"But I spoke to him the day before the Rochdale game and told him that, with us being without Tom, I wanted him to step up to the plate.
"I said that I needed him to work really hard to occupy Rochdale's two centre-backs and he did that very well.
"I was really pleased with his performance and it is good to have options up front."
