Walsall Football Club manager Dean Smith has today provided a further update on the clubs chase for French striker Mathieu Manset, revealing that the club have had no contact with the 24-year-old since talks stalled early last week.
The Metz born Manset joined the Saddlers on trial last month and made a goal-scoring debut against Leicester City, a performance which earned him much praise from both press and supporters.
His successful trial resulted in the club offering him a one-year contract with an option for a further year after appearances, however it is understood that Manset and his agent would prefer a two year deal, and have been holding out for such an offer for more than a week.
Speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; “There is no news on Mathieu, I don’t know what has happened there. We made the offer and they have not accepted it, we have not heard anything else.
“It’s one of those things where you make an offer depending on a player’s value.
"I have no doubt he could have improved us but you don’t go risking the budget for next season on a player who has been at four clubs in two years.
“If he believes in himself that much he can go and play the games and get a contract. It’s still there, the deal.
"But I’m looking to get somebody else in and if they come in during the week then it will be dead, yes.”
