Walsall Football Club manager Dean Smith has today discussed the club's recent pre-season training camp, which took place at Exeter University, and included games against Taunton Town and Torquay United.

Despite the games resulting in a draw and a defeat, Smith was keen to point towards the positive of the trip, which gave him an opportunity to look at different tactical options.

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Smith said; "We had a really intense week, got a lot of good work into the players and learned a lot about each other.

“There will be plenty of funny results going around in pre-season and in the two games we’ve played, we’ve fielded two different teams in each and also played two different systems.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half against Torquay but we bossed the second half and bossed the game at Taunton too and probably should have scored a lot more.

“The trip was good for everybody, even though we came back with a couple of injuries to Ben Purkiss and Jordan Cook, which was the big disappointment.

“We are just gearing ourselves up for August 9.”
