Walsall Football Club manager Dean Smith has today spoken about his attempt to bring former Saddlers' striker Will Grigg back to the club, just a year after he joined Brentford for a, tribunal awarded, £325,000.
Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Smith said; “I would have loved to have Will back but when a club has bought a player from us for close to half a million pounds, they are not going to loan him back to you.
“I’ve spoken to Will this summer as he asked me for a little bit of advice. I’ve know him a long time and I like to think I’ve helped him with his career.
“I’m not sure the system Brentford played last season suited his game but if MK Dons play the way we did when we had Will I have no doubt he will do well there.”
Grigg first came to prominence when making his debut for Walsall as a raw teenager in 2008. He went on to play 109 times for the West Midlands outfit and finished the 2012/13 campaigns as top-scorer for the Saddlers with 20 goals.
As part of Grigg's initial transfer, as well as the £325,000 fee, Walsall are due £30,000 for every 20 competitive first-team games played up to a maximum of 100 games.
The Bees also paid £50,000 when promotion to The Championship was achieved and could pay-out a further £250,000 if promotion to the Premier League is secured.
Along with a 20% sell on clause if and when Will is transferred from to another club.
