Walsall captain Andy Butler, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has today spoken of the bright future ahead for the football club, whether he stays or goes;

Speaking to Michael Beardmore of the Walsall Advertiser, Butler said; "There has been progression. We have not got worse, we have got better because if you look at it, the only thing which saved us last year was a 16-game unbeaten run.

"We have not been bad this season, we have been consistent, we have just sometimes not been clinical in games we have dominated. I can't put my finger on what's happened recently. It's just little mistakes, a few decisions but everyone has those so there is no point complaining.

"Most of the games have been tight and things could have gone either way in any of the games. It's just unfortunate. We'll learn from it hopefully next season. Last year if we had not had the freak 16-game unbeaten run we might have finished near the bottom. The results just happened to come for us at that time of the season.

"There's a good platform, we have a few players signed in Paul Downing, Sam Mantom, Adam Chambers and Rich O'Donnell. We have some good youngsters as well, the likes of Reece Flanagan and Amadou Bakayoko and Mal Benning. The future looks good."
