Walsall go in to the game after a successful pre-season campaign, which included an undefeated tour of Trinidad & Tobago and several ties against local sides, including a 6-0 victory over Alfreton Town, a 1-0 win over Leeds United and a 5-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

The Saddlers have seen several squad changes over the summer, out went, Aaron Williams (Worcester City), Jamie Paterson (Nottingham Forest), Will Grigg (Brentford), Connor Taylor (Nuneaton Town), Febian Brandy (Sheffield United), Jake Jones (Tamworth), Richard Taundry (Unatt), and George Bowerman (Unatt), in came Milan Lalkovic (Chelsea), Troy Hewitt (Queens Park Rangers), Richard O'Donnell (Chesterfield), James McQuilkin (Hereford United), Romaine Sawyers & Shane Lewis (West Bromwich Albion).

Tranmere have also had a fairly successful pre-season, which includes a 9-0 victory over Cammell Laird, a 5-0 win over Rhyl and a 2-0 defeat to Wrexham, the club has also seen it's fair share of arrivals and departures over the summer, leaving were, Zoumana Bakayogo, Michael Kay, Paul Black, Adam McGurk, Danny Harrison and David Amoo, whilst arriving at Prenton Park are, Jason Koumas, James Rowe, Chris Atkinson, Akpo Sodje, Stephen Foster, Evan Horwood and Ryan Lowe.

Last season Walsall were undefeated against their North-West opponents, notching up a win and a draw in the process, and will be hoping to continue in the same vein.
