Following Tuesday evening's pre-season friendly with Alfreton Town, guest Jay Burgess shares his Match Report;
We arrived at the Impact Stadium, hoping to see what our new strike force would deliver. New man Lalkovic started and wow did he look lively he was definitely a breath of fresh air.
Kieron Morris was out wide and he looked a very able replacement for the departing Jamie Paterson. The Saddlers had three attempts at goal early on with some good saves from the Alfreton goalkeeper kept Walsall at bay.
It took until the 30th minute where Romaine Sawyers took advantage of some bad defending and chipped the ball over the keeper to finally break the deadlock.
Goal number two came from our superstar loanee, Milan Lalkovic a nice through ball from Nicky Featherstone saw Lalkovic turn his defender and finish 2-0
Not a lot happened after that some nice build up play and a few headers at goal no more goals for the first half.
H/T: Alfreton Town 0 Walsall 2 (Sawyers 30' Lalkovič 36')
The second half began very much the same as the first, Walsall had made several changes which saw Taylor, Holden, Hewitt, Westcarr and Baxendale replace, Benning, Butler, Lalkovic, Sawyers and Mantom.
The second half was fairly quiet, we had to wait until the 74th minute for some nice build up play to be finished by Ashley Hemmings.
Two minutes later Walsall looked hungry with Craig Westcarr making some blistering runs it paid off with Baxendale breaking away and rounding the keeper to then cut back to Westcarr who headed the ball home, making it 4-0.
Ten minutes went by with nothing happening, until Craig Westcarr broke away to finish and make it 5-0.
The Saddlers were in control, everyone looked very fit and fresh, by the looks of it could we have another great season ahead.
With virtually the last kick of the game, a cross drilled into the box, which new signing Troy Hewitt got on the end of to make it 6-0.
Ten seconds later the full time whistle went to end a very impressive Walsall display.
F/T: Alfreton Town 0 Walsall 6 (Sawyers 30', Lalkovič 36', Hemmings 74', Westcarr 76' & 83', Hewitt 90')
Sawyers and McQuilkin were also impressive and should be offered deals towards the end of the week. I think we may still need another winger, but other than that a very solid Saddlers team.
Could it be Grigg & Brandy Who? We will see... Leeds on Saturday. Unbeaten so far pre-season, very good showing and the makings of a solid unit.
