This evening Walsall's Banks's Stadium played host to the Walsall Senior Cup Final, which was this year contested by Walsall and Stafford Rangers.
The Saddlers had reached the final after defeating, Sporting Khalsa, Walsall Wood and Sutton Coldfield Town during the previous rounds whilst Rangers knocked out Wolverhampton Casuals, Stafford Town, Rushall Olympic and Brocton to make the all-or-nothing tie.
As the game kicked off, it was the visitors who began on top, making an immediate impact through Danny Quinn who burst through the middle and fired past Roberts in the Walsall goal after only three minutes.
It wasn't until ten minutes had passed before The Saddlers had their first spell of pressure, forcing a couple of corners, which ultimately came to nothing. Soon after Keiron Morris had The Saddlers first shot on goal after he collected left-back Mal Benning's cross but Rangers' 'keeper Alcock pushed the fine effort over the bar.
After around twelve minutes, The Saddlers equalised after what can only be described as a disaster for Rangers' defender Peter Heler as he deflects a Saddlers free-kick into his own net.
Stafford had a chance to retake the lead not long after when Luke Bottomer suddenly broke clear but Alex Dallison came quickly across to cover.
Later Walsall were awarded a free kick, defender Richard Taundry took it and his effort hit the top of the oppositions bar, not long after Saddlers striker George Bowerman suffered a knock and after receiving some treatment was replaced by Dan Griffiths, who has recently been offered his first professional contract.
Soon after Saddlers defender Alex Dallison was sent off for a foul on Quinn, the Walsall players were furious but Dallison was too slow to react to a ball over the top, Quinn nipped in, and was brought down, in an attempt to reorganise, Richard Taundry dropped back into defence having started in midfield, Dan Griffiths became the lone striker.
Despite the Saddlers numerical disadvantage the game was fairly even until half time
H/T: Walsall 1 Stafford Rangers 1
The second half was a little more one sided than the first with The Saddlers content to allow Rangers to hold possession.
Stafford striker Sean Kinsella had the first chance, his shot took a nasty bounce in front of Liam Roberts but the Saddlers 'keeper gathered it well.
The Saddlers continued to keep Rangers at bay, often forcing them to shoot from range. As the game reached the one-hour point, Rangers' Peter Heler flashed an effort wide from distance.
Shortly after, Saddlers' 'keeper Liam Roberts is on hand to save from Quinn at close range, this however was academic as the Stafford striker was adjudged to be offside
Walsall gave away a soft free kick a little later, Sean Kinsella went over the bar as Rangers continued to make the running
Substitute Michael Carr had a shot deflected over for Rangers, the resulting corner was easily defended by the depleted Saddlers.
Then, Saddlers striker Aaron Williams squandered a great chance. The Saddlers broke on the counter, leaving Williams all alone, however he awaited a challenge, and was duly dispossessed by Brown who nipped in with a saving tackle.
Just before the 80th minute Sean Kinsella was replaced by Fabrice Kasiama, who almost made an immediate impact, as he nearly sets up Quinn with a cute cross.
As the clock ticked past the 80 minute mark, Walsall gave away a penalty, injury plagued defender Richard Taundry was the guilty man, he brought down Stafford striker Quinn, who regained his feet to dispatch the penalty past a helpless Liam Roberts.
Following the goal, there were very few opportunities for either side, Stafford were content to keep the ball, whilst The Saddlers struggled to compete with less men, The Saddlers' plight wasn't helped by a rather picky referee who in our opinion had a poor game overall.
F/T: Walsall 1 (Williams 12') Stafford Rangers 2 (Quinn 2' & PEN 81')
