SADDLERS SEARCHING FOR NEW FIRST CHOICE 'KEEPER

Walsall manager Dean Smith has today spoken of his determination to sign a permanent number one goalkeeper, and his determination to avoid a repeat of last season which saw The Saddlers sign four 'keepers on loan following the disappointing form of David Grof and the lack of fitness of Jimmy Walker.
Walsall manager Dean Smith has today confirmed the club is taking steps to sign a permanent number one goalkeeper, and hope to avoid a repeat of last season which saw The Saddlers sign four 'keepers on loan following the disappointing form of David Grof and the lack of fitness of Jimmy Walker.

Speaking to BBC WM, Smith said, "I've got a list of keepers I'll be speaking to. At the start of the season, I was hoping that Wacka and Groffy would be the two for us, but it didn't work out that way, which sometimes happens in football."

Smith continued, "Fortunately, our recruitment has been really good in terms of the keepers we've been able to bring in; Karl Darlow, Aaron McCarey, Ian McLoughlin and Sam Johnstone."

The Saddlers began the campaign with Hungarian stopper David Grof between the sticks, however after a series of poor performances culminating in the clubs exit from the FA Cup at the First Round stage, Grof was dropped in favour of a series of loan signings, beginning with Nottingham Forest's Karl Darlow, shortly following his departure Wolverhampton Wanderers' Aaron McCarey was recruited, his subsequent recall meant focus switched to Milton Keynes Dons' Ian McLoughlin, before Manchester United prospect Sam Johnstone rounded off the season.

Walsall have already been linked with several stoppers this summer, you can see some of the rumours, HERE.
