Taking time from his busy training schedule, Saddlers starlet George Bowerman talks to Bescot Banter.
After coming through the ranks and impressing for both the Reserve and Youth teams, you signed professional terms in the summer of 2010; as a life-long Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, how did it feel to sign for The Saddlers?
It felt good, obviously. I’ve been at the Club since I was a young lad and it’s nice that I worked my way through and managed to get myself a first-team contract.
In February 2011, you were sent out on loan to Redditch United to get some games under your belt; what do you feel the brief first team experience added to your game?
It’s a physical League and obviously I had to toughen up because I was only young and I got to play regular games which was good for my development and got me used to playing 90 minutes again.
You made your first team debut in August 2011 as a substitute against Middlesbrough in the League Cup; what were you feeling as you got your Saddlers career underway?
Just relief really. Relief that I was finally given the chance to prove to myself and the Manager that I could do the job for him and the team. I think it’s been going well since then.
In December 2011 you signed a new 18-month contract with the option for a further year; with plenty of interest surrounding you was it an easy decision to extend your stay at The Banks’s Stadium?
Obviously, I just want to get games under my belt and get a bit more experience of playing League One football and continue to help the team and score some goals myself – that’s all I want to do, really.
After an impressive goal-scoring start to the 2011/12 campaign, you won the Football League Young Player of the Month for September; how does it feel to be recognised for your contribution to the team so early in your career?
It’s a nice award to win and it was good recognition for the team as well of how well we were playing and I scored a few goals that month. It’s good to have and hopefully I’ll win a few more throughout my career as well.
And finally, what has been the highlight of your career so far?
Probably my debut. That was probably the best thing because it’s what I’d been working towards for all my life, really as a young lad so that was the pinnacle.
