As Walsall slope through another disappointing season guest columnist Richard Evans ponders the issues;
I find myself asking the following question
What do we really want?
With all the talk of protests i ask what are we protesting about? Results/Manager or Bonser and the rent situation
Do the two go hand in hand. For some people they are complete opposite and a run of bad results basically stems from the lack of funds from Bonser but when things are good (do we have good times?) there is no credit given to you know who.
Lots of talk recently regarding giving up season tickets and then the usual people jumping on the bandwagon being fooled by the cheap talk. Alot of it is the same rhetoric from the last few seasons from the same people who STILL attend the games.
For me next season takes on a new slant on the whole stay away theme.
Financial Fair Play rules state that we cant spend more than a certain percentage of our total revenue on the playing staff so what does that mean for Walsall FC in the coming seasons.
The only way to increase the revenue is to increase the attendances to generate that extra income to support the playing staff. From next year those very people staying away yet still asking the club to show ambition and spend money before the decide to return, this will not be allowed under the FFP rules and so begins the chicken and egg scenario once again.
Yes for many Bonser is the elephant in the room for many people but i reckon if it were not for him then perhaps we would most definitely be in a worse position financially. Although the clubs debt is 2.5 million it is fairly modest compared to many clubs in the country.
The Failure of ITV digital i feel spooked our chairman into trying to be self sustaining to a certain extent whilst not allowing us to chase the dream at the same time as jeopardising the clubs future. With a little hindsight/perspective has this been a bad thing.
