Blog: Time for Sadler to Ring the Changes?

We're back with another over-opinionated blog as we hope to make sense of what's going on at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsDon't forget, you can join us across social media as we continue to cover the ups and downs of the Saddlers.

Walsall were back in League Two action on Tuesday evening when they made their way north to Brunton Park as they took on Carlisle United, with the Saddlers looking to earn what would have been their first win in three league games.

Sadly, it was a far-too-familiar tale as, despite opening the scoring with just seven minutes on the clock, the Saddlers failed to take any of their other chances as the Cumbrians levelled the scores and continued their good spell under manager Mark Hughes.

Going into the game on the back of a lacklustre display against Swindon Town, fans could've been forgiven for expecting Mat Sadler to ring the changes, especially with several of the recent starters showing signs of fatigue and poor form.

However, Sadler opted to make just two changes and, more annoyingly, used just two of his possible five substitutions as a seeming lack of a 'plan b' continues to see the once twelve point lead slip to just two ahead of this weekend's outing.

Whatever the reasons for the gaffer's refusal to make changes, it is becoming increasingly clear there is a lack of belief among the group, some lack confidence, whilst others seem over-confident and go on to make poor decisions at crucial times.

With just eleven games remaining between now and the end of the campaign, there is no better time for Sadler to show some real leadership and drop players who are underperforming, not least to give them some rest following such a busy run of games.

There is no excuse for the likes of Harry Williams and Danny Johnson remaining on the sidelines when some of their over-used colleagues are hardly performing at an un-droppable standard.

Despite the team already securing sixty-eight points, this season is in real danger of turning into something of a disaster as, despite a Play-Off place being the minimum we should expect, the team is showing very few signs of being capable of winning the games necessary to make the leap to League One.

Whatever happens over the coming days and weeks, we believe that, with a fairly strong squad at his disposal, the gaffer has to be more willing to roll with the punches and not stand stubbornly on the sidelines as his team struggles to break down their opposition.
